Why Is Your Woodworking Machine Lacking Power? The 12 Most Common Causes

A woodworking machine that lacks power is not necessarily faulty. In most cases, the problem is related to its operating environment, electrical supply or the way it is being used.

Before contacting our after-sales service, take a few minutes to check the following points.

1. An unsuitable extension lead

An extension lead that is too long or has an insufficient cable cross-section can cause a voltage drop. As a result, the motor loses power, overheats and may even trip its thermal protection.

2. An inadequate electrical supply

An undersized electrical installation, a faulty socket or an overloaded electrical circuit may prevent the motor from delivering its full power.

3. Several machines connected to the same circuit

Avoid connecting several high-power machines to the same electrical circuit. This may cause a voltage drop and reduce the machine's performance.

4. The depth of cut is too great

Whether you are using a planer-thicknesser, table saw, spindle moulder or another woodworking machine, removing too much material in a single pass places unnecessary strain on the motor.

It is always better to make several shallow passes than one heavy cut.

5. Dull cutting tools

A worn saw blade, planer knife or router cutter significantly increases the load on the motor.

Keeping your cutting tools sharp improves machining quality while reducing energy consumption.

6. Feeding the workpiece too quickly

Always allow the cutting tool to work at its own pace. Feeding the workpiece too quickly may give the impression that the machine lacks power.

7. Insufficient dust extraction

Wood chips accumulating around the cutting tool or inside the machine can hinder the machining process and increase the mechanical load on the motor.

8. A loose drive belt

On some machines, an incorrectly tensioned drive belt may slip and reduce the amount of power transmitted to the cutting tool.

9. Low mains voltage

If the supply voltage is below the machine's rated voltage, the motor will automatically deliver less power.

10. A cold motor

On certain machines, it is advisable to let the motor run unloaded for a short time before starting demanding machining operations.

11. Particularly hard timber

Oak, beech, robinia (black locust) and many exotic hardwoods naturally require considerably more power than softwoods.

12. Using the machine beyond its capabilities

Every machine has limits regarding cutting width, cutting height, depth of cut and motor power. Exceeding these limits will inevitably reduce performance.

In most cases, a loss of power is not caused by a faulty motor. Before replacing parts or dismantling your machine, carefully check all the points listed above.

Something as simple as an unsuitable extension lead, a dull cutting tool or an excessive depth of cut is often enough to explain this type of problem.
