The recoil starter for Scheppach and Woodster brush cutters and garden tools – Ref. 5904704002 is designed to allow the petrol engine to be started manually.

By pulling the handle, the starter cord temporarily turns the engine to initiate the starting process. The return spring then automatically rewinds the cord into the housing.

A recoil starter in good condition ensures reliable and efficient starting of the machine.

When should the recoil starter be replaced?

The recoil starter for Scheppach and Woodster brush cutters and garden tools – Ref. 5904704002 may need to be replaced in the following cases:

• Starter cord is broken, frayed or heavily worn
• Cord no longer retracts correctly
• Starter spins freely without turning the engine
• Mechanism jams when pulling the handle
• Return spring is broken, weakened or defective
• Starter pawls are worn or broken
• Starter handle or housing is damaged
• Starting has become difficult due to poor engine engagement

When several components of the mechanism are worn or damaged, replacing the complete recoil starter helps restore reliable starting of the machine.

Important information about recoil starters

A broken recoil starter is generally not caused by the starter itself. It is designed to turn an engine that should rotate freely during starting.

If the engine offers abnormal resistance, excessive force is placed on the cord and starter mechanism, which can cause the cord, pulley, pawls or other internal components to break.

Common causes of recoil starter failure

• Starter not compatible with the machine: the same machine can be equipped with different engines and starters depending on its exact reference and manufacturing date.
• Engine seized or difficult to turn: seized piston, damaged bearing or another mechanical problem.
• Insufficient oil or lubrication failure, which may cause the engine to seize.
• Excessive accumulation of oil or fuel in the cylinder, which may cause hydraulic lock (hydrolock).
• Decompression or valve problem on a 4-stroke engine, making the engine abnormally difficult to turn.
• Repeated attempts to start the engine when it is resisting or seized.
• Pulling the cord abruptly or all the way to its limit, which can damage the mechanism.

Before replacing a broken recoil starter

If your recoil starter has broken shortly after installation or use, it is essential to check that the engine turns freely before fitting a new starter.

Replacing the starter without identifying the cause of abnormal engine resistance may result in immediate damage to the new part.

Check compatibility carefully

Before purchasing, always check the exact reference and manufacturing date shown on your machine's identification plate.

The same model may be fitted with different engines and recoil starters depending on its manufacturing period. Visual similarity between two starters does not guarantee compatibility.

The warranty cannot apply when damage results from incompatibility with the machine, engine resistance or seizure, or abnormal mechanical stress on the recoil starter.
